OK, so I can’t take credit for this catchy phrase, but I will tell you that when I heard it my ears perked up. “YES!” – and I popped a little power-fist into the air. Maybe it caught you that way, too.

As I monitor the health care reform debate (which is actually an insurance reform debate, “health” being chronically absent from the equation) and consider my career’s worth of experience in wellness care, medicine, and nursing, here’s what I know for sure. High-quality healthcare is a starts-inside thing. Systems like ours, which are designed to patch you up after you’ve gone off the deep end, is not designed for health – it’s an emergency repair program. Important, but not sustainable, and not complete.
